In doing so, the artist works with different photographic imaging processes in order to probe the immediate relationship between image and beholder. Her works play with the transition from the body of an object to the surface of the image, then moving back to the experience of space. She analyzes the many-faceted implications of ever-changing pictorial conventions and points of view, as well as questions related to origin and authorship, but also, ultimately, our position in the face of the contradictory truths found in circulating images. For Prospect, her first solo exhibition in an Austrian venue, Leykauf draws on research into the local painting collections of the Graz Museum, the Neue Galerie Graz, and the Styrian History Museum; reproductions of the pictures found there were greatly enlarged for the show and installed in the exhibition space as image panels. This gives rise to walk-through pictorial spaces, which the artist combines with numerous video works and with a series of framed (artist) portraits. The latter, based on reproductions of iconic landscape paintings from the nineteenth century, were photographically created through direct exposure. Alexandra Leykauf (b. in 1976) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Nuremberg (DE) and at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam (NL). She lives and works in Berlin (DE). |
